First Period
Bell work: When you think of the word/term CARBOHYDRATE/CARB, what pops into your head?
Carbon- C
Hydrate- H2O
Periodic Table
Carbonation- CO2
Potatoes –Starch
Sugar
Diet
Students made a foldable with 4 sections: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic Acids
Carbohydrates: small sugar molecules to large sugar molecules.
Examples:
A. Monosaccharide (one sugar); Monosaccharide is small.
B. Disaccharide (2 sugars)
C. Polysaccharide (many sugars)
Almost all sugars end in the letters “ose.”
Lipids: General term for compounds which are not soluble in water.
What happens when you try to mix oil and water? They stay separate.
What does it mean when something is “not soluble”?
It cannot mix completely with water.
HYDROPHOBIC- HYDRO-WATER
PHOBIC- SCARED OF
LIPIDS ARE AFRAID OF WATER. They will not mix with water.
Remember: Lipids -“stores the most energy”
Examples:
1. Fats
2. Phospholipids
3. Oils
(Will be covered during the second period):
Proteins:
Nucleic Acids:
