Chapter 5 Vocabulary
Metals- on the left side of the periodic table
Non-metals- on the right side of the periodic table
Metalloids- properties of both metals and nonmetals
Valence electrons- electron on the last energy level of an element
Nobel gas- elements in group 18; all have 8 valence electrons except for helium which has 2
Alkaline metal- group 1 elements except for hydrogen which goes in group 17
Period- horizontal row in the periodic table; tells how many energy levels
Group- vertical column in the periodic table; have similar properties
Reactivity- how an element will or will not combine or replace another element
Halogen- group 17
Inert gas- group 18; noble gas
Alkaline Earth Metal- group 2; found in earth
Transition elements- groups 3-12
