English Harris

11-10-14 – Harris – Eng. I

  1. Walked in as they were doing Ex. 504, finding verbs and direct objects (W.C.).
  2. On board:  do Now!  Ex. 16, Pg. 505. Note:  Direct object answers “what?” or “whom?”.
  3. Indirect object answers:  To whom?  Or For whom?  It will always come between the verb and the direct object.  Be sure you look for the verb first in trying to find the indirect object.
  4. ACT III, PG. 863. Benvolio wants to avoid an altercation (a fight).  He knows and tells his friend Mercutio that it is hot and that the Capulets are out in the streets, too, and that Mercutio is quick-tempered and picks fights easily and he gives him examples of fights Mercutio has started in the past.
  5. Pg. 864 = Mercutio gives a monologue.  The word “simple” still today still means “stupid.”
  6. A “foil” is an enemy.  Know what is the difference between Mercutio and Benvolio.  Mercutio is a hot-head—ready to fight.  Benvolio tries to get off the street because it’s hot and the Capulets are walking around.
  7. Homework: Read Acts- I- III.
