NOTES
Prefixes tell you how many atoms you have.
·
This is different than ionic compounds, because
in ionic compounds you get the empirical formula.
·
The molecular formula is the actual number of
atoms in the compound.
·
When the first one is singular then you don’t
put the prefix in front of it. Element that is named first and there are not
multiples, then leave the prefix off
·
Written second have a higher electronegativity
and have a negative charge or characteristic
EXAMPLES:
Molecular
N2O4
Empirical
NO2
Regular Covalent:
Dinitrogen
tetroxide = N2O4
Sulfur
dichloride = SCl2
disilicon
hexabromide = Si2Br6
dichlorine monoxide = Cl2O
