Biology

Biology Plus Notes- October 6, 2015
First Period

The students defined the following key words:
Please make sure that they have these written in their Biology composition book. (Zechmaih was not here, so please make sure he does this.)

1. Taxonomy- the field of biology that deals with classifying organisms.
2. Domaincurrently the largest group in the classification system
3. Kingdom- the next largest level in the classification system
4. Prokaryotes- single-celled organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles
5. Eukaryotes- organisms whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles
6. Heterotrophs- organisms that cannot make their own food, like fungi
7. Autotrophs- organisms that make their own food; they have rigid cell walls made of cellulose (plants)
8. Binomial nomenclature-a system for naming organisms that is still used today; it gives each kind of organism a two-part name.  Ex. Canis lupus for wolves
9. Genus- a classification level below family that includes related species
10. Phylogeny- the study of the evolutionary history of                 related species
11. Fossils- the remains or traces of organisms that lived in the past
12. Phylogenetic tree- a diagram that shows the emergence of species over time
