Biologists used a system of classification to organize information about the diversity of living things.

2000 years ago Aristotle developed a system.  Then another scientist developed a formal system- Linnaeus’s system was the first formal system of taxonomy. Linnaeus’s method of naming organisms called Binomial Nomenclature. It gives each species a scientific name with 2 parts.

Biologists use scientific names for species because common names vary in their use.Ex: Ursus americanus is the American black bear.
