First Period
Biologists used a system of classification to organize information about the diversity of living things.
2000 years ago Aristotle developed a system. Then another scientist developed a formal system- Linnaeus’s system was the first formal system of taxonomy. Linnaeus’s method of naming organisms called Binomial Nomenclature. It gives each species a scientific name with 2 parts.
Biologists use scientific names for species because common names vary in their use.Ex: Ursus americanus is the American black bear.
Students made a CLASSFICATION foldable.
Top left block: What is classification? A way to organize different objects into groups of similar things.
Top right block: What is Biological classification?
A way to group similar organisms (living thing) together.

Genus : A group of species that are closely related and share a common ancestor.
