Biology Mr P

Biology Plus Notes- October 28, 2015
First Period- 2 Hours

Bell Work- Nucleic Acids are made up of monomers (small parts) called what?  Nucleotides

Macro- large, big
Micro- small

Big molecules are made up of smaller parts.

Monomers are made of Nucleotides
Monomers are made of Phosphate, Sugar, and Nitrogen Base

2 kinds of nucleic acids- DNA and RNA
DNA has 2 strands
RNA has one strand

Students read an article about Organic Compounds and made of list of words or phrases they did not know.

Dry weight- weight not including water

Synthesize- to build; to make

Interchangeable- words or objects that can be switched or swapped out and mean the same thing. (computer-laptop; cup-glass)

Glycogen- stored in muscles or in the liver and it is for longer-term energy (energy you will use over a longer period of time)

Linoleic- related to vegetable oil (Lipids are fats, oils, or waxes.)

**Fats store more energy than carbohydrates.

Students then completed a guided reading.
DNA- Genetic Code
1. 50% of carbon atoms second energy level is filled.
2. DNA belongs to the Nucleic Acid  macromolecule group.
3.
Contrast:
1.  Monosaccharide-  simple sugar; one sugar; short chain of carbohydrates
2. Disaccharide- 2 monosaccharides linked together
3. Polysaccharide- longer carbohydrate chains
4. Characteristic of lipids that enable them to keep unwanted substances from going through the cell membrane- LIPIDS DO NOT DISSOLVE IN WATER.
5. What protein function suggests that most enzymes are proteins? Speed up chemical reactions (enzymes function is to speed up chemical reactions in cells).
