First Period Only
Bell work- Students get credit for trying to
answer the bell work question. If they don’t write anything, they get no
credit! Please make sure they know this.
Discussion of major differences in Primary and
Secondary Succession- Primary takes longer because soil has to be created.
Secondary has less steps, primary takes longer;
Primary Succession: The process of creating life in an
area where no life previously existed. Just bare rock.
Secondary Succession: The process of re-stabilization
that follows a disturbance in an area where life has formed an ecosystem.
Something was already there to begin with.
Succession- Natural, gradual changes in the types of
species that live in an area; can be primary or secondary. No people need to be involved.
The gradual replacement of one plant community by
another through natural processes over time.
Primary Succession- The development of an ecosystem in an
area that has never had a community living within it.
No soil, so no community living there. In order for
there to be soil there must be nutrients like nitrogen.
Bare rock—Lichens—Mosses—Herbs, weeds—Grasses, Shrubs,
Pine, Hickories, Immature oaks---Oaks, hickories, black walnut….
Pioneer Species- Lichens that do not need soil to
survive. They are called this because
they are the FIRST.
Seeds are blown in by the wind or carried by animals.
Simple plants like mosses can grow in the new soil.
The plants grow and the soil gets enriched as plants die.
Pioneer (1st) species like LICHENS (stuff
on the rocks) are called pioneers because they are the 1st organisms
to grow.
Succession happens after a disturbance in an area.
Disturbance – fire, tornadoes, etc.
