US History This Week

QUIZ Tomorrow!!!
Study the following topics:

Chapter 1 Section 4 (from last week)
Monroe doctrine: US warns European nations to stay out of American affairs/asserts sovereignty

Election of 1800: led to the 12th Amendment


Marbury vs. Madison: established the principle of judicial review

Louisiana purchase: doubled size of US, allowed for Western expansion

War of 1812: Established a US as truly independent sovereign (control self) nation

Chapter 2 
Trail of Tears: With the Indian Removal Act, Indians were forced from their lands. Many of the Cherokees protested but 16,000 Cherokees to walk from the Southeast to Oklahoma along what came to be called the Trail of Tears

Underground Railroad: Northern people who were against slavery, both black and white, risked their lives to help slaves escape to freedom through a loosely organized network.

Manifest destiny: the idea that the United States was destined to own most or all of North America. The phrase Manifest Destiny became a rallying cry for expansionists.

Second Great Awakening: powerful religious movement that influenced American life and the formation of new religious groups. Protestants were discriminating against Catholics and Jews.

California gold rush: Gold was found in 1848 in the American River east of Sacramento. The news quickly spread to the East. By 1849, about 80,000 Americans were headed for California in a mass migration. (People expanded (spread) West to California looking for gold.
