Each students was given a can of vegetables. They were asked to tell me what was inside their can. I told them that sometimes labels could be wrong. They were then told to look inside their can. Each student found something different in their can. One student found glue, another student found paper clips etc.
I told them that labels are sometimes incorrect and that we should not always believe what other people say about us.
Next students were told to write down negative labels people have given to them at one time. Some students wrote these words on their can: stupid, skinny, ugly, slow, retarted, etc
I then went on to explain that it is our job to ignore those negative labels. Some said that those words do hurt, but they end up making us stronger. Now it was time to tear off those negative labels. Where they wrote those mean words, they were now able to tear the label of the can off throw them in the trash. They really enjoyed that part.
Students were then given a piece of colored paper. They wrote their name on it and wrote adjectives to describe themselves. Some wrote smart, fun, funny, nice, etc. They then taped those positive labels on their can.
Throughout the year when students see other students do nice things or want to give them a compliment, they will write it down on a sheet of paper and put it in the persons can.
Tomorrow we will learn about clothing labels and what information can be found on them.
