1-8-15 – Harris – Eng. I
Note:  L did not have her Lit. book when Ms. Harris called on her.
Connie Farmer (interpreter) is here.
  1. Note:  Do now:  If you had the power of persuasion, name 3 things you would persuade people to do.  Explain your responses.
  2. The kids took a mini-quiz on all the information I typed yesterday that should be in their notes.
  3. Some of the questions were:  what is the difference between fiction and non-fiction, what are 3 forms of non-fiction writing, what does “ambiguous” mean, what are 3 types of essays.
  4. There are 5 types of essays.  Ambiguous means unclear.  Name the essays:  reflective, narrative, persuasive or argumentative.
  5. Central idea of an essay: the thesis.
  6. On the back of the yellow sheet, write the definition of “tone.”
  7. What are the 3 types of figurative language you can use when you write.
  8. Repetition, parallel structure, restatements, and rhetorical questions are called what?
  9. The pattern or organization of writing is called what?
  10. The order in which things happen is called what kind of order?
Important:  On board:  Homework:  Lit. Book – use the information on pages 426 – 430 to decide what topic you can write/present for class.
Be sure you take notes on your notebook paper when you read from the book!! You will do better on quizzes and test because writing helps you remember the information better!!
  1. Be sure you keep the yellow sheet of paper—go back and fill in the missing information—and then study it because she won’t count today’s quiz but she may give you another test tomorrow with the same information.  Don’t lose yellow paper as you may get to use it if you have another quiz soon!!
  2. Know the 5 types of essays.  Know that descriptive essays involve describing—explaining—using vivid (colorful) words.
  3. Descriptive essays = you must use so much information that the reader can “see” what you are describing in the mind.
  4. 2 types of articles:  news and features.
  5. Speeches:  not always long.  Impromptu speeches:  speech in a conversational style—with little or no preparation.
  6. A “talk” = a wanting of interaction.
  7. Pg. 428= Camryn reported on info on that page.  When you develop an idea you elaborate.  Write this down.
  8. When you use numbers to compare that is called = “stats” or statistics.
  9. Chronological = things in order
  10. Compare and Contrast = a form of organization
  11. Cause and Effect = know a description of this type of writing.
Homework:  Decide what topic you want to present but use the information in the book to do this
