Dosi Biology

Notes Wednesday, August 19, 2015

Bellwork: Obviously these notes are only for the first period of the class.

The graph shows carrying capacity of white-tailed deer. The graph shows that the population decreased after it reached its carrying capacity. A possible reason for the decrease is hunters or not enough food or water.

Students received an article about bees. Why are bees important? They pollinate flowers. They drop off pollen from one flower to the next. Bees also make honey.

Video about honeybees…. Population of something is collapsing (going down) -CCD (colony collapsing disorder). If colony of bees goes down, then plants don’t grow, then food source for some animals decreases.

Death of bees- parasites (mite similar to bed bug lives inside of honeybee hive and attaches to bees and takes nutrients away from bees. The mites can lead to the collapse of the hive.).

Insecticide- Insect (bug) cide (kill) Insecticides kill bugs. Used on parasites.

Tuesday:

Notes for Graphing

1. Titles ( Graph : Population of mice)
x-axis must have a title
y-axis must have a title

2. Make sure units on each axis are equal.

Students had a worksheet on population graphs.
Questions were related to reading the graph and determining the carrying capacity and the factors that would affect the carrying capacity. The population of the white pines decreased after 110 years.

The carrying capacity of the white pine in this ecosystem was about 400 where the graph levels off after the highest point.

The factors that would affect the carrying capacity of the white pines were glaciers, tornadoes, plant disease, predators (insects), etc.

The white pine population was able to reach a high point of 462 when carrying capacity was 400 due to possibility of more rain or change in the food chain ( deer population decreased, tree grew).

Between 110 years and 140 years the white pine population decreased quickly and then came back a little.

Voc:

Carrying Capacity- the maximum number of organisms the environment is able to support

Constant- when you look at a population graph and number of organisms stays almost the same.
Why did our number of rabbits become constant? Because the environment reached its carrying capacity.

Reproduction, Conservation, population, pollution, habitat, factors (things that affect environment), increase, decline....
