Levels of Organization in an Ecosystem
(Students have a worksheet in their composition where all of this information should be recorded.)
Organism- any living thing consisting of at least one cell (When talking about an organism, we are talking about one thing.) Example- a gopher, a fish, a dog
Population- a group of the same species that live in one area; Example- fish in a pond
Community- all of the different species in a specific area; Example- fish, snakes, turtles in the pond
Ecosystem- includes all of the living and nonliving factors in the environment; nonliving (mountains, weather) living factor - biotic factor, nonliving- abiotic; Example- all of the birds, buffalo, grass, mountains, etc. in a valley
Biome- entire region or global (quite large) community, which has a special climate and plant growth; Example- Desert, rain forest, tundra, plains, grasslands
Sometimes ecosystems vary in size (can be very large or very small like an ecosystem in a jar). An ecosystem could be a fallen log in the forest. Then the bugs in the log would be an ecosystem. Biomes can be confusing sometimes because different biomes can be similar, but there are different animals and plants in them.
