1-12-15- HARRIS – ENG. 1

NOTE:  J needs her Lit book and needs to speak up when she’s absent and has missed handouts!!!

1. Do Now:  Lit. Bk. – Pg. 539.  Write the definition.  Rhetorical devices:  parallelism—restatement—repetition---analogy.
2. On board:  Ifg you missed anyu day last week, make friends with pages 4235 – 430 in your lit. bk.  Friday’s HW pgs.  539-549.
3. Homework:  Lit. Bk. Pg.  548, Critical Thinking (1-4).  Due 01/14/15 Wednesday.  Write the questions!
4. Today’s Objective:  Determine author’s purpose:  Evaluate rhetorical devices.
5. Parallellism = helps keep the relationships among your ideas clear, using phrases and sentences that have similar grammatical form.   Change:   He enjoys riding his bike and basketball.   Ex:  He enjoys riding his bike and playing basketball.
6. Restatement = expressing the same idea but in your own words.  Ex:  It is a gloomy and cloudy day.  Restatement:  It is dark and dreary outside.
7. Be sure you read the first 2 pages of the speech.  Refer to handout: “I Have a Dream”…Reading:  Analyze Persuasive Techniques.  Be sure you use all 5 vocabulary words in that bubble.
8. DO NOT COME IN HERE TOMORROW W/O YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
9. A score = 20 years. Allude = refer.  Pres. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
10. Momentous = very important.
11. Dr. King’s speech reminds us—at the start—of the famous Gettysburg address (speech).
12. Uses figurative language where and when he makes comparisons. Ex:  poverty is not an island but he says that to make his point that poverty can be isolating.
13. A promissory note:  saying in writing that you will pay someone back for money you borrowed.
14. “We come to our nation’s capital to cash a check.”  This is figurative language:  he is saying that all Americans?   need to live in freedom and equality.  What does he mean by the “architect” and the “check” – the architects refer to our founding fathers, George Washington and others.  They wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution = means he wants it cashed.
15. If you “default” = you fail to do something required to do.
16. Dr. King is saying that America has defaulted on their “promissory note” of granting all Americans freedom and justice.

18. Example of repetitioin:  “We refuse to believe”…
