Note:  L is not here.
Note:  Students, you would do well to copy my notes in your own handwriting.  It will help you to remember better as well.
  1. Do now!  Without using the dictionary give the definition or synonym to the following words:
  1. Ambiguous - can have more than 1 meaning; a double meaning
  2. Comprehend - to understand
  3. Interpret - to explain; to make understandable
  4. Insight - a revelation about someone or something
  5. Instinct - natural reactions
  6. Sources - where information comes from
  7. Statistics - numbers; anything that give you info in a math. process
  8. Connection - a relationship
  9. Research - to investigate to find information
  1. Lit. book, pg. 425. Note:  To “clarify” = means to make clear—understandable.  A feeling is an emotion.  You will be writing and giving a speech that will need to involve your emotion.
  2. 3 reasons authors write:  1) persuade   2) inform   3) entertain
  3. On board:  Homework:  Lit. bk. – Read pgs. 427-430 and be able to answer questions or demonstrate knowledge of the reading.
  4. Take notes: pg. 426.  Non-fiction – talks about real life; it presents facts.  3 types of non-fiction are:  essays, articles, and speeches.
Help to remember:  “F” = Fiction  = Fake   ---   and Non-fiction = Not Fake

  1. Point of View = your Perspective
  2. Difference between a speech and an essay = A speech is verbal—you have to deliver (say) it.
  3. An article = provides information about a topic. If Ms. Harris wrote an article trying to get time to class from 5 min. to 7 min.  The point or purpose of my speech is to persuade.
  4. If I just want to give you information = it’s an informative speech
  5. If I want you to think like I think, I am giving a persuasive speech.
  6. There are how many types of essays?  5   Now read everything in that box.
  7. Narrative essays = tell the story of actual experiences or events; a story
  8. Expository essays = informs readers about a topic and explains what all is involved.  (Note:  when you think “expository” think “explain.”
  9. Persuasive or Argumentative essays =
