I had a busy week last week as we prepared to interpret the sold out performance of Umoja 2012 at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church.  We had a record number of people from our Deaf community attend and I hope to see even more next year.  Umoja is a Broadway-like performance at a very reasonable price.  I hope you don’t miss the opportunity next time.

Cochlear Implants Redefine What It Means To Be Deaf: http://www.nhpr.org/post/cochlear-implants-redefine-what-it-means-be-deaf

Quote from the article: “"In the past, we didn't have much to offer deaf children so they would automatically be in a sign culture and grow up that way," Miyamoto says. "That was comfortable, but when cochlear implants came along and there was something to be done, many of them were successful. So they ended up living their lives in the hearing world rather than the deaf world."

Deaf children’s gesture mismatches provide clues to learning moments: http://news.uchicago.edu/article/2012/04/05/deaf-children-s-gesture-mismatches-provide-clues-learning-moments

Quote from article: The deaf child watching the interpreter will then miss any messages that the teacher sends in gesture and not in speech. “The gestures hearing children see during math instruction are often crucial parts of the lesson, turning children who are not ready to learn into learners,” Goldin-Meadow noted.
