Chemistry

CHAPTER 14

1.     Define:
a.     Suspension
b.     Colloid
c.     Soluble,
d.     Miscible,
e.     Immiscible
f.      Soluble

2.     What is a homogeneous mixture? What is a solution? What is a solvent? What is a solute?

Solution is made up of two different parts:
a)     Solvent (does the dissolving)
b)    Solute (what is being dissolved)

·      When you measure a solution, you will see the percent by weight or percent by volume.
·      Universal Solvent: Water (the most general type)
·      The ability of a solvent is based on the type of molecule it is.
o   Example:
§  Polar: Water is a polar molecule
§  Non-Polar: Gas, Super Glue

3.     Tell how to find each of the following:
a.     Percent by mass

b.     Percent by Volume

c.     Molarity: Simple (we will use the most)
M = moles of solute/ liter of solution

d.     Molality:
m = moles of solute / kg of solvent
