TWO CATEGORIES OF RELIGION:

1. Universalizing Religion:
·       Want to appeal to all people
·       Are usually written down
·       EXAMPLES:                        
o   Christianity
o   Islam
o   Buddhism (monks)

2. Ethnic Religion:
·       Appeal to a smaller group of people living in one place
·       Are passed down orally
·       EXAMPLES:
o   Hindui
o   Judiaism
o   African
o   Mixed Religion throughout the world



UNIVERSALIZING RELIGIONS:

1. CHRISTIANITY (CHRISTIANS)
·       The worlds largest religion (2 billion are Christian (adherents))
o   Most are in Europe, Americas, Australia
·       Christianity in the UNITED STATES:
o   Most are Baptist and Catholic         

                  THREE BRANCHES OF CHRISTIANITY
o   Roman Catholics 51 %
§  They pray to saints (Mary)
o   Protestant 24%
§  From England… will speak English
§  Baptist, Methodist, Etc.
o   Eastern Orthodox 11%
§  Other smaller branches of Christianity comprise 14% of all Christians
§  Wear black robes, crosses, incents
§  They use to be a part of the Soviet Union


2. ISLAM (MUSLIMS)
·       The second largest world religion
·       1.3 billion adherents (followers)
·       Clusters of Muslims are from Middle, East, North AFRICA, and South Asia
·       Core of Islamic beliefs is the FIVE PILLARS
·       TWO BRANCES:
o   Sunnis (89%
o   Shias or Shites 16% (HARD CORE MUSLIMS)
§  Al-Qaida: Bombers A group of Shias

3. BUDDHISM (BUDDHISTS)
·       About 400 million adherents (followers) but they are hard to count
·       Main religion in China and has a lot in Southeast Asia
·       THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS:
o   Life means suffering (life is hard)
o   The origin of suffering is attachment (Life is hard because we like stuff)
o   You can stop your suffering, by giving up everything and focusing on your inner beauty
·       THREE BRANCHES
o   Mahayana (China, Japan, Korea)
o   Theraveda (Southeast Asia)
o   Tantra
