CHAPTER 9 STUDY GUIDE

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING
            Negotiations between labor and management

BLACKLISTED
When a person is NOT allowed to work in any factory because he or she tried to form a union at their previous job

LOCKOUT
This is when management refuses to let the employees work to try and force them to negotiate a new contract.

BOYCOTT
This is when a group of people refuses to do business with a specific company. They are trying to hurt that company buy not buying products
EXAMPLE: South Carolina is currently being boycotted by the NAACP because the Confederate flag is being flown over their state capital.

MEDIATION
            This is a voluntary negotiation between sides and involves a third party.

STRIKE
A work stoppage by the union members is this

ARBITRATION
If this occurs, both sides are required to accept the third person’s decision

INJUNCTION
            A court order ending the work stoppage

FRINGE BENEFITS
Positive benefits from your job in addition to your job

BLUE COLLAR
Manual labor manufacturing, non farm

WHITE COLLAR
Professionals- office workers, sales person, teachers, and doctors
Most jobs that require a college degree
Examples: Doctor is both a skilled worker and a white-collar worker

SCAB
            A person that crosses a picket line to replace the striking workers

COLA
Cost of Living Adjustment

MEA
Memphis Education Association, NOT all teachers are members


A large increase in the national minimum wage would cause teenage unemployment to rise.
