Chemistry Notes

Chemistry Chapter 9

1.     There are 5 basic types of chemical reactions, what are they? What happens in each type?

1.1.SYNTHESIS REACTION
Two or more reactants and one product.
A + X à AX
      (+)  (-)      (+-)
2Na  + Cl2 à 2NaCl

1.2.DECOMPOSITION
One Reactant will break into parts
AX à A + X
Na2CO3 à Na2O + CO2

1.3.COMBUSTION
Carbohydrate
C11H22O11 + O2 à CO2 + H2O
Hydrocarbon
CH + O2 à CO2 + H2O

1.4.SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTION
A + BX à AX + B
+    +-      +-    +
Metal replaces metal, non-metal replaces non-metal, positive replaces positive
Mg + Pb(No3)2 à Mg (NO3)2 + Pb

USE THE ACTIVITY SERIES
*When you see a single replacement reaction…. Look at the element that is by itself, then look to see what element it is trying to replace… MAKE SURE the Single Element is more reactant (HIGHER ON THE ACTIVITY SERIES SHEET) If it is not…. Write NO REACTION.

1.5.DOUBLE REPLACEMENT REACTION
AX + BY à AY + BX
+-     +-      +-    +-
The positive ions change partners
HCl + CaCO3 à H2CO3 + CaCl2
