Future Fundraiser for an iPad?  Please read the following and complete this survey:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XDBWK2P
I currently use my personal equipment as tools to help the deaf students I work with...
(laptop, camcorder, digital camera, and iPod).  I also purchase blank DVDs and CDs to create media for the students.  Remember, most deaf students have hearing parents.. and unfortunately, many parents do not know sign language.  I become more of a sign language teacher than an interpreter with the hopes that they will develop the skills needed to use an interpreter traditionally by time they reach middle school.
A sample of what I do/have done:
- Record how spelling words will be signed for a test and create a DVD for the student to study and recognize the sign while studying the correct spelling.
- Record signing the Preamble to the Constitution so 5th grade students will have the option to learn how to sign it for the required assignment of reciting it (verbally or manually for our D/HH students).
- Create an audio reading of 5th grade science study guide for a hard of hearing student who reads on a first grade level.
I'm currently working on a project to create a DVD of academic signs ("homework", "paper", "teacher", etc.) to help jump start classroom signing knowledge for deaf students.
I'm fortunate that I have these tools and the basic technical know-how for the benefit of our students.
I recently became aware of how the iPad can be an effective tool to use with the young deaf population.
Even a local organization briefly shows how an iPad is used in developing literacy for deaf children (http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2011/dec/05/deaf-mentors-aiding-families/ ).
I do not have plans to add an iPad to my personal collection of technical "toys"... if that was the case, I would more than happy to share with the students I work with.... but I would LOVE to see the students I work with benefit from this modern tool... hence my idea of possibly having a fundraiser so I could get an iPad to use at school.  Hmm, what do you think?  I wonder if I would have enough support from family, friends, colleagues, church members, deaf community, and/or interpreters to accomplish this task.
Please complete this survey so I would know if I would have enough support for this task.  Forward this link to others who may be interested in supporting this goal.
