World Geography

WE DO HAVE HOMEWORK:
STUDENTS NEED TO FINISH THEIR EARTHQUAKE MAPS: See Previous Post for INFO!!!!

  • Color Map
  • Label Map
    • Names of Faults
    • Arrow showing directions of the Faults
    • Dots showing the locations of large earthquakes (worksheet)
  • Answer Questions from the worksheet

Here are the Notes from today.

EARTHQUAKES
An earthquake is the sudden release of energy built up from plates.

FOUR PARTS OF THE EARTH:
1.     INNER CORE: solid nickel, heavy and hot
1)    Why it is it hot? Because it is so big and holds in its heat and pressure. When earth was made, all the heat was trapped inside from the friction.
2)    Why is it solid? Because everything is pressing down on it making it heavy
2.     OUTER CORE: Liquid like lava
3.     MANTLE: Plastic, bendable rock, flexible, like taffy (Solid rock and melted rock)
4.     CRUST: Hard, solid, rigid

EARTHQUAKES: An Earthquake is the sudden release of energy built up from the movement of a plate.

Earthquakes occur (happen) why?
·       Earthquakes occur because the earth is dynamic (Constantly moving)

TWO TYPES OF PLATES:
1.                                         Continental (Land) PLATES
2.     Oceanic (Water) (These are heavier) PLATES

Continent Drift is the movement of plates (continents) all over the place
Wegener used fossils to support his theory of continental drift.
Since he found FOSSILS of the same animal on 2 different continents meaning that they were probably connected at some time

Tectonic Plates are Parts of the Land that is moving
Þ    CONVERGENT: Come Together
Þ    DIVERGENT: Move apart/Divide
Þ    TRANSFORM: Slide past each other

4 Parts of the Earthquake
1.     FOCUS: Where earthquakes occur inside the ground. Where it earthquakes starts.
2.     FAULT: Where the earthquake occurs
3.     EPICENTER: the point on the top of the earth above an earthquake.
4.     WAVES: Energy comes out in waves.

1.     P-Wave
·      Also known as Longitudinal
·      GOES RIGHT to LEFT
·      Shows that energy does not sit still.
·      Moves faster through the planet
2.     S-Waves
·      Also known as Transverse
·      GOES UP and DOWN
·      Causes damage to buildings and structures

Þ    Why do the plates move? CONVECTION
The cycle of rising and cooling: Heat (Hot) rises, Cool air sinks
