The Hearing-Impaired Program enjoyed its recent field trip (Thursday, September 29th) to Deaf Connect. The main purpose of the all-day field trip was to view the Art Exhibit at Deaf Connect – its first ever, our local Interpreting Service for the Deaf. It was also a highlight to a brief study of Deaf history and Deaf culture. The students and teachers rode the city bus down and back to 144 North Bellevue north of Poplar. This allowed many of our students their first time ever to ride a city bus which is one of their transition goals. There at the exhibit, Deaf Connect’s Director and recently retired WSHS Counselor for the Deaf, Teresa Wilson, showed a power point presentation about the different functions and services of the interpreting organization, and introduced some of the interpreters who work there. The use of the videophone was demonstrated, and all received an explanation of the various art exhibits, ranging from quilts to mosaic glass work. Some of our own students were proud to see their own art work on display at an exhibit. We congratulate Shannan Savage, Lorian Jones, and Joshua Branscomb, for their artistic contributions to this celebrated event. This activity was a wonderful close to our observance of Deaf Awareness Month, and we’re grateful to Deaf Connect for their invitation. The trip culminated in a “silent” lunch at a nearby restaurant.
