Chemistry Brooks- 1st Period

REMEMBER to go by Mr. Brooks room after school to pick up the extra credit. Also Remember that the EXTRA CREDIT project is due on Monday. Regarding some new piece of technology.

·       FIND ARTICLE:

o    Find an article on ANY type of NEW TECHNOLOGY

o    The Article must be recent (2011)

o    Examples:

§  New Hearing Aids

§  New Running Shoes

§  New Electric Car

§  NEW TECHNOLOGY

·       READ ARTICLE

·       WRITE A SUMMARY:

o    Write and type a ONE PAGE SUMMARY

o    Explaining what the article is about.

o    Also write COMMENTS about it… your opinion on the article. (What you like about it, didn’t like about it, why it’s cool, how it will help people, if it will change the world, etc.)

·       VISUAL AID:

o    Create some type of Visual Aid

o    Examples:

§  Power Point (5-more slides)

§  Poster

§  Model/Example of your technology

Today we did a lab on finding the density of a liquid. Below explains what we did. We will finish the lab on Monday.

LIQUID DENSITY LAB:

Liquid One: Salt Water

1.     Measure the mass (weight) of the empty cylinder

a.      Put it on a flat surface and read it accurately (On window seal, locker) Do Not use the desk because it is not flat.

b.      Write the mass (weight) at the top of the paper.

2.      Add 10 ml (between 10-20 ml) of liquid do not go under 10. (This is so you can get three SF’s.)

3.     Measure the volume of liquid in cylinder.

a.      Write the measurement down in the blank space between the mass and volume.

4.     Measure the mass (weight) of the liquid

5.     Add a little bit more liquid  

6.     Repeat steps 3-5 seven more times. You will end up with a total of 8 measurements for each.

Then pour out liquid and do the same with the rubbing alcohol.

Liquid Two Alcohol:

Repeat steps one through six with rubbing alcohol.

How to relate to life:

You know the oil spill in the gulf was caused due to an inaccurate measurement of density.... It is important to have accurate density, as you can see, it can ultimately cause lives to be lost or jobs to be kept. 

LAB IN A NUT SHELL: Do the below steps for salt water and alcohol

Measure Mass of empty cylinder

Add Liquid

Measure Mass (weight)

Measure Volume

Add Liquid and repeat seven more times (Total 8 Times)
