• 26. Describe Tellson’s bank. What is the bank’s attitude toward change? It’s very old,
dark and cramped. It was ugly and small and dirty. The bank owners didn’t want to
improve or “embellish” (make better) it.
• 27. How does Tellson’s treat the young men in its employ? They didn’t want younger
people out front. They wanted the old workers out front because that meant respect.
• 28. What behavior of Mrs. Cruncher makes Mr. Cruncher angry? She was praying (pg.
67) Why does this anger Him? He thinks she’s being conceited and that her prayers
aren’t worth anything. He thought she was praying against him, not for him. He was
trying to put a price on prayers that were free that came only from the goodness of her
heart.
• 29. What physical characteristic of his father’s does young Jerry wonder about? Can you
make a guess about it.
Note: Jerry did odd jobs—there’s nothing specific but he does different things, he swept the floor, he
opened the door for customers, he cleaned the bathroom, he replaced the supplies.
